Bunny is a Sheepadoodle — an Old English sheepdog crossed with a poodle — born in 2019 and living in Tacoma, Washington, with owner Alexis Devine, an artist. Devine was inspired by a speech-language pathologist who had taught her own dog to use buttons, and started Bunny on a soundboard as a puppy.
How the buttons work
Bunny’s setup uses FluentPet HexTiles — a grid of programmable buttons, each recorded with a single word. Over time Bunny’s board grew to more than 100 buttons. She presses sequences that appear to express needs, wants, and occasionally something stranger — the combinations that “sound like” existential questions are the ones that go viral and launch the think-pieces.

Here’s the honest version: Bunny is part of a comparative-cognition research project studying button use in dogs. What’s established is that dogs can learn to associate a button with an outcome. Whether stringing buttons together constitutes language — grammar, intent, abstraction — is genuinely unsettled, and the serious researchers say so.
