Frida is a Labrador Retriever trained by the Mexican Navy (Secretaría de Marina) as part of its urban search-and-rescue canine unit, paired with handler Israel Arauz Salinas. Her working gear — orange-tinted safety goggles and rubber rescue boots to protect her paws from rubble and glass — became her visual signature and made her instantly identifiable in news coverage.
The 2017 earthquake
When a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck central Mexico on September 19, 2017, killing hundreds and collapsing buildings across Mexico City, Frida was deployed to search the wreckage. Photos and video of her being lowered into rubble in her goggles and boots spread nationally and internationally, and her navy handlers credited her with helping locate a dozen survivors during that response alone, among dozens of people found across her full career.
Legacy
Frida retired from active search work in 2019 after roughly a decade of service across multiple disaster responses, including earlier deployments to Haiti and Ecuador. Mexico honored her with a statue, shown in full search gear, in Puebla, and she remains one of the most recognized real-life hero dogs of the 2010s.
