Bobbie was a Scotch Collie and English Shepherd mix owned by Frank and Elizabeth Brazier of Silverton, Oregon. In August 1923 the family drove east to visit relatives in Wolcott, Indiana, bringing Bobbie along. At a gas stop in Wolcott, a pack of local dogs chased him off, and despite days of searching the Braziers had to leave for Oregon without him. They assumed he was gone for good.

The 2,500-mile walk home

Six months later, in February 1924, a scrawny, footsore collie turned up on the Braziers’ doorstep in Silverton. It was Bobbie — thinner, worn down, his feet raw, but home. He had traveled roughly 2,500 miles across the country on his own through the winter; Ripley’s Believe It or Not! later put the estimate as high as 3,000. As the story spread, people who had fed or sheltered a matching collie wrote in from along the route, and their accounts let researchers piece together his path east to west.

The legacy

The local paper ran the story, wire services picked it up, and Bobbie became a national celebrity. He received fan mail, keys to cities, a jeweled collar, and a cameo in a silent film about his own journey. When he died in 1927, he was buried with honors at the Oregon Humane Society, and the mayor of Portland gave the eulogy. Silverton still honors him with an annual pet parade and a downtown mural — a small-town collie who became one of the most famous dogs in America for the simplest possible reason: he came home.
